I have spent a good part of my life
in search of places of natural beauty: camping in the mountains
of the Gobi desert, walking among the volcanoes of northern
Sumatra, evenings high on the granite walls of Yosemite, losing
myself among the maze of canyons deep in the Colorado plateau.
At one time in my life it seemed I was almost obsessed with
stone - I studied geology in college, climbed on rock (as
a sport), and wandered among rocky places taking photographs.
I collected stones and wondered about the stories they told.
So it seems very natural for me now to be striving to create
beautiful objects of earth and fire - of stoneware and porcelain
clays.
I was introduced to pottery by a gifted high school art teacher,
George Knaus. He let me build kilns, mix my own glazes, and
make a wide variety of pottery. But at the time it never occurred
to me that I could make a career of doing this. It would quite
a while before I actually met a potter. I went to college
(University of Pennsylvania), majored in Geology, worked as
a geologist, traveled
and worked in Asia for three years, came back and worked at
a couple of different jobs. In my free time, I wandered about
the Rocky Mountain west dazzled by the beauty of the place.
Then I met pottery again, and knew that I had found my home,
something that would connect my experiences and personality
into a profession. I opened the gallery and studio in October
of 1997. I am a full-time potter.
